Welcome to Be It Resolved!

Because someone is wrong on the internet.

Tired of flame wars on discussion boards covering the same ground, over and over again?

Tired of political pundits that always repeat the same talking points and never apply critical thinking?

Tired of opinion blogs that exaggerate support and censor criticism?

Be It Resolved provides a solution by inviting all points of view, under the constraint that they are expressed formally. This is meant to lead to the following:

  • The level of discourse is elevated above that of discussion boards, up to a level of formal debate
  • No point of view is censored, as they are on partisan opinion blogs
  • Every view point is open to criticism, none is accepted dogmatically
  • The state of debate is always current and persistent, not to be buried under more topical threads as in discussion boards, which usually rehash the same topics

Guidelines

Be It Resolved prioritizes clarity. This may be difficult for discussions with numerous threads, on topics that have been ongoing for as long as we've been able to speak. For the purpose of clarity, here is a working list of editing guidelines:

  • Each position in a debate has its own page.
  • Each page either lists main supporting or rebuttal statements for/against the position in major headings, and elaborated in the heading body text.
  • Rebuttals are indented, or given its own subheading, as necessary.
  • There can only be at most subheadings at a level of four (eg. 3.1.1.1.1).
  • If the discussion overreaches the subheading limit, a subheading will be given its own page, and its contents moved there.
  • A reasonable subheading to give its own page would be one with the most subheadings.
  • To limit unnecessary reproduction, external links are encouraged for elaboration of supporting statements. This site is intended to be a source of information on the state of the debate, not a source of information in general. In order to get to the state of debate quickly and comprehensively, it is necessary to refer externally when possible. Wikipedia is preferred as the default external resource. Other wikis are also acceptable.
